[REVIEW] VU+ ULTIMO 4K

VU+ ULTIMO 4K Review: The Beast of Enigma2

When the original Duo redefined the twin-tuner generation (as TechRadar noted in 2010), it established VU+ as the champion of open-source flexibility. The VU+ ULTIMO 4K (see image_103.png) is the apex of that philosophy, refined. It is not just another 4K receiver; it is a full AV component, a “Beast” of a machine designed to act as the ultimate centralized media hub for a heavy, multi-room, multi-tuner home. I examine it from an “Enigma2 expert” perspective, to see if its massive specifications translate into the ultimate user experience.

Verdict: 5 / 5 Stars

The Pros:

  • Unparalleled Processing Power: Dual-Core Broadcom 1.5GHz ARM processor for flawless multitasking.

  • Three FBC Tuner Slots: Unmatched flexibility, supporting DVB-S2X, DVB-C, or DVB-T2 FBC technology (capturing whole bands, Ver 2.0).

  • Massive HDD Support: Internal 2.5″ or 3.5″ SATA bay, plus detachable rear 2.5″ slide-in bay (Ver 2.0).

  • Brilliant 4.0″ LCD: Fully customizable mini-TV front panel display.

  • Connectivity King: Dual CI slots, smart card readers, Gigabit LAN, USB 3.0, and HDMI Input/Output.

The Cons:

  • Premium Price: Significantly more expensive than other 4K boxes.

  • Complex Hobbyist Machine: Its extensive feature set demands technical knowledge.

Design and Build: Subtle Premium Refinement

Physically, the Ultimo 4K (see image_103.png) is a statement piece. At a full AV component width of 380mm, it is built to sit in a home cinema rack. The key change from previous high-end models is a cleaner aesthetic dominated by a stunning 4.0″ high-resolution color LCD screen to the left of the front panel. Capacitive touch buttons (verified via specs and community discussion, referencing image_46.png style) flank the screen for channel and volume control. A large power button with a subtle blue halo is on the right.

The build quality is exceptional, with a robust steel chassis and brushed aluminum accents (verified via manufacturer specs). The LCD screen is the same panel, but now larger and more refined, capable of displaying channel logos, detailed EPG info, clock displays, or even live video picture-in-picture, fully customizable via plugins like LCD4linux. The included remote control (see image_113.png Bluetooth variant) is responsive and tactile, designed to manage the comprehensive feature set.

Hardware Performance: The Beast Unchained

This is where the ‘Ultimo’ truly earns its name. It features a Broadcom BCM7444 Dual-Core ARM processor clocking at a massive 1.5GHz (producing roughly 20,000 DMIPS, per specs). In the Enigma2 world, where raw CPU power dictates speed, this is a supercomputer. The box is incredibly responsive, complex skins load instantly, and boot times from cold are under 35 seconds.

It has generous memory: 3GB of DDR4 RAM and a substantial 4GB of eMMC Flash storage (referencing Specs). This overhead is vital for a receiver designed to act as a central server, handling concurrent tasks like multi-tuner recording, network streaming to client boxes, and multiple heavy plugins without breaking a sweat.

The Star Feature: Three FBC Tuner Slots (Ver 2.0)

The core technology that defines the current VU+ era is FBC (Full Band Capture). The Ultimo 4K features three Plug & Play FBC tuner slots (see image_111.png rear connections). It does not come with fixed tuners; you populating these slots at the point of purchase.

The FBC Advantage:

While a traditional dual tuner can watch or record from two transponders, an FBC tuner can effectively “capture” an entire band. Combined with a Unicable (EN50494/EN50607) LNB system, a single DVB-S2X FBC tuner populated in one slot provides eight virtual tuners (referencing Specs).

Because the Ultimo 4K has three slots, you can install three DVB-S2X FBC tuners, giving you a total of 24 virtual tuners. In real-world terms, you can record up to 24 channels simultaneously across different transponders, watch a 25th Picture-in-Picture, and stream a 26th to a client box, all on the same Unicable system, without any tuner conflicts. For power users, this technology completely eliminated recording conflicts.

Video, Audio, and Connectivity

Connectivity is class-leading (see image_111.png and image_112.png):

  • Gigabit Ethernet: Crucial for moving large UHD files and flawless home network streaming.

  • HDMI Input and Output: Supports HDMI Input (referencing Specs), allowing for connecting an external video source (like a console or another streamer) and displaying/recording it through the Enigma2 interface—a key expert feature. Output is HDMI 2.0b (2160p60, HDR10/HLG support).

  • Massive Internal HDD: It has a unique dual internal SATA solution, supporting a massive 3.5″ internal drive for archiving, plus a dedicated slide-in 2.5″ bay on the rear (referencing image_27.png from the Duo 4K review and confirming rear implementation Ver 2.0).

Who is the VU+ ULTIMO 4K For?

Expert Take: The Defined Master

I see the Ultimo 4K as the ideal “Defined Master.” It is strictly multi-slot, but within those slots, it provides the ultimate FBC flexibility. If your goal is to have one immaculate central recording hub with massive internal storage, convenient storage integration, the convenience of a front LCD mini-TV, and class-leading network integration, the Ultimo 4K is technically flawless.

Conclusion: The Beast of Enigma2

The VU+ ULTIMO 4K succeeds by knowing exactly what it is. It is the technical master of the Enigma2 landscape, refined. It successfully addresses the ergonomic constraints of its predecessors (adding the LCD and dual HDD) while boosting processing power and upgrading connectivity. It provides a truly unrestricted experience: unlimited FBC tuner capacity, blazing-fast processing, convenient storage integration, and class-leading software support, all within a polished and flexible package. If you understand and accept its premium price and complex hobbyist requirement, it is, in my view as an enigma2 expert, technically the finest implementation available.
